Upgrade your HD copying Windows 7

It may happen that you want to upgrade your Hard Disk without loosing all your data, especially your Windows partition. Fortunately this is pretty easy but with Windows Vista and Windows Seven you’ll probably have boot problems, here is how I did:

  1. recreate the disk structure on the new HardDisk
  2. copy files from the old one
  3. repair Windows boot (startup)

1. This can be achieved with Windows Disk Management tool (Win+R, type compmgmt.msc), or with any Disk Partitioning tool like the well known GParted (Live CD).
2. You can copy the files straight from your Windows with DriveImage XML, or with any Live Linux distro (e.g. Slax)
3. Now, especially if you’re using Windows 7 you will need to repair the system Startup, otherwise you will get errors, or you will see nothing happen^^. To do this use Windows Startup Repair tool, you can find it:

After all this trouble you’ll have your brand new cloned Hard Disk booting smoothly!
